hodgepodge

This post is going to be a bit of a hodgepodge of different things.  First an update on me.  I'm still doing physical therapy for the pain in my neck and shoulders.  It's going slow but I think I'm making a little bit of progress.  One thing that sucks is the way the insurance works for all of this.  It is my understanding in Pennsylvania when you're in a car accident at first your own car insurance pays the medical bills, up to whatever you policy limit is.  This is regardless of who is at fault.  Once the car insurance money is exhausted, then your medical insurance takes over.  The issue with this is that my insurance plan with Aetna only covers 30 PT visits a year.  After that you are on your own.  My understanding is that next year the provision of Obamacare will kick in that will eliminate that insurance companies ability to enact treatment limits.  I hope so; I have a lot wrong with me that I will need physical therapy to treat.

As you might have guessed I'm about to hit that limit. Friday visit will be the last one that will be covered, after that it will all come out of pocket.  The insurance company of the person who hit me has accept liability and will be reimbursing me but that will only be after my treatment is completed.  I hope I only need a few more weeks of treatment.

On happier news, The National released their new album, Trouble Will Find Me, on Tuesday.  I'm a huge fan of The National.  They are the only band I can really be all hipsters about and say how I knew about them before almost anyone else.  I first discover them a little bit after they released their Cherry Tree ep back in 2004 and I have been hooked ever since

Their new album fits well into the familiar deep melancholy sound that they have cultivated over the years.  Matt Berninger vocals are particularly strong and this album does a good job of showcasing them.  The rest of the band is also on the top of their game creating a lush and deceptively complex sound.  The tracks Demons and Sea of Love are particular stand outs.  Lyrically while not having the sign along quality of their previous offering, is still quite strong.  I will warn you if you are going through a rough patch, The National is both the best and worst thing to listen to.  They speak directly to a heart that is broken.  Overall Trouble Will Find Me is a fine album that I highly recommend.  If you have never heard any of The National's music before I would recommend starting with Boxer, their 2007 album before diving right into Trouble Will Find Me.

I have been working on a fantasy mini-comic lately and I think the script is just about to the point where I can bring in an artist.  I'm going to post an ad on digital webbing and see what sort of artist I can get for my budget.  Below is a copy of my ad.  If you know anyone who you think would be interested please send them my way.

HI,

I'm yet another writer who can't draw in need of an illustrator to bring his vision to life.  Oh and guess what, I can't afford to pay much either.  Now, now, don't everyone volunteer at once.

What I have is an 8 pages story in the fantasy genre.  I'm looking for someone to do the cover and interior, full color would be preferable but if you work in only B&W that will work too.  If you can letter as well that would be great, if not I can take care of that.  While I can't pay as much as the art is worth, what I can do is offer you $50($5 a page + $10) plus 100 copies of the book.  Also I will be putting it online, so hopefully that will give both of us tons of exposure.

I'm looking for someone who can draw realistic looking man and woman.  The girls should look fit without looking like a Barbie doll with a boob job.

If you are interested please email me a sample page of your work.  I want to see both how you do panel layout as well as your art style.  My email address is yommer16@gmail.com, please put Danger Road in the subject.

I'm hoping this will be a fun and rewarding project for you.

Thank you for your time

T. Perran Mitchell

Also if you know of any artist looking for a writer to work with please let me know.  Right now I'm not looking to make money so much as work on my craft and build up my writing resume.  I can write in style or genre the needed.  I can also format the script in whatever style works best for the artist.

Speaking of comics, I thought it would be fun to post the last time I made a mini-comic.  I was really into writing about five years ago.  I took a little break to focus on my day job/career.  Now I'm trying to get my writing mojo back.  Below is character study mini-comic I did inspired by a night out at the bar with a friend.  That night we play a game where you pick someone out of the crowed and makeup a little story about their life.  This story stuck with me so much that I need to see it as a comic.  The comic is not for the faint of heart and if you have any self-harm triggers, best to skip this one.

Working for Beakfast

I meant to post last week, but I ended up getting cause up in some other writing projects.  On that note I'm putting the finish touches on script for an 8 page mini comic.  If you know an artist who is looking to break into comics and wants a nice sample piece to show off, please send them my way.  I'm not really in the position to pay them anything right now, but what I can do is pay for all the printing cost.  Basically I would get 500 copies made and give the artiest 250 along a digital copy so they can print up as many as they would like.  Once the comic is done, I'll be posting it here. Now on to the food.

We have thing at work call Breakfast Club.  On the second Friday of the month a pair of people make breakfast for everyone in the club.  This past Friday was me and my dad's turn.  Some people just bring bagels and juices or maybe get a bunch of breakfast sandwiches from the buildings cafĂ©.  My Dad and I go all out.  He makes a fantastic French toast, where he lets the bread marinate in the mike/egg mixture overnight forming a sort of custard.

This breakfast club I tried something new and made my variation of the Holiday Strata from Maryana Vollstedt's “The Big Book ofBreakfast.”

Because of the number of people we had coming I doubled this receipt.

Here what you need:
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter and some extra butter for use
  • 8 to 10 slices of sourdough bread
  • 1.5 pounds of maple flavor breakfast sausage (you can use regular sausages, but I like Wegman's maple sausage)
  • 1 cup of aged cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup of sweat cheddar cheese
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups of whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/8 of fresh ground pepper
  • 1 teaspoon of dry mustard
  • Cast iron skillet
  • Disposable lasagna pan (9in by 13in)
  • Mixing bowls
  • Small dishes
  • Cheese grater
Steps:
  • Butter the bread then cut into small pieces
  • Grate then half each type of cheese
  • Separate the cheese so that you have two dishes with a half cup of each cheese type in each dish
  • Cook the sausage in the cast iron skillet
  • Chop the sausage into small pieces
  • Whisk the eggs in a mixing bowl
  • Melt the butter
  • Mix the melted butter, milk, salt, pepper and mustard with the eggs
  • Grease the Lasagna pan
  • Layer the bottom of the pan with half the bread
  • Add the sausage to the pan
  • Cover the bread and sausage with one of the dishes of cheese
  • Add the rest of the bread
  • Pour the liquid mixture into the pan
  • Sprinkle on the rest of the cheese.  Grate on more cheese to taste
  • Cover the pan and place in the refrigerator over night
  • The next day preheat the oven to 350 degrees
  • Put the pan into the oven uncovered for 45-50 minutes

This dish was a big hit with everyone.  The maple sausage added a nice sweetness without being over powering.  Next time I make this I'm going to try replacing the aged cheddar with a nice Asiago cheese.  The good thing about this dish is that it will work well with all sorts of different cheese and meats. Leave a comment with your variation.

On the knitting front, I'm finished up with the part of the project that can do without.  The next step is learning how to put half of this on waste yarn.

That pretty much brings you up to speed on all my projects

We have a Winner or Two, plus what I'm working on now

My schedule has been super busy lately I haven't really had much time to try new recipes.  But I don't want to leave my readers out in the cold so I thought I'd give you a preview of what I'm knitting right.

Can you guess what it is going to be?

This is the first time I have tried knitting in the round.  I found joining the two sides to be a bit of a challenge.  Even when I thought I had gotten all of the twists out, I still managed to twist it on the second and third tries.  In the end I had to have a friend join it for me.  The piece will be real challenge as the pattern contains a lot of new techniques.

Speaking of knitting I do believe I had a little contest going.  If you commented on my blog as to what color you wanted fingerless gloves, you would be in the running to have me make those very gloves for you.  Well I decided to extend my contest and name two winners.  That right both Lisa and Beth won!!!!  Send me a message with your address via the book of faces and once I finish your gloves I’ll shoot them off to you.  Don’t worry you should have them before it gets cold.

Love Them Gloves

When it comes to birthday gifts, ones that arrive nearly 3 months late need to be pretty special to make someone's day.  Well it turns out the fingerless gloves that I knitted for my sister's early Dec birthday mush be pretty special because they made her day when she finally received them last week.

I originally picked up this free pattern from Michaels when I was first learning to knit a year ago to make as a gift for someone else.  Very quickly into the project my kitting teacher realized that this was way too much for someone who could hardly knit two stitches in a row without fouling up.  The pattern was set aside and I started on my Franken-scarf.  After making a many scarfs I was finally ready to come back to the fingerless gloves.

I was able to force my way thought, with much help, and knit one glove for that person. The glove was OK, but the finger holes were much smaller than any adult's hands because I bind off way tighter then I should or want.  I was planning on giving them another try but then I got hurt and everything got put on hold.  As you read last week, soon after that my life when to hell.  In a fit of depression I started on the gloves for my sister.  I had already picked out a very fun multicolor yarn for the project.  My sister has a very eclectic fashion sense and crazy rainbow gloves would fit in perfectly.

Over the course of about 17 hours straight, I knitted these gloves.  With the first glove I had to stop and start completely over from scratch three separate times, once when I was 2/3 of the way done, because I had made some mistake that was beyond my ability to fix.  But after all the trial and error I was able to bang the second glove out in about 3 hours and without making any mistakes.  Then, because I had been awake for nearly 23 hours straight after getting only 5 hours of sleep the night before, I crash hard.

It took me another three weeks to get myself to a post office and send them out, but I think it was well worth the wait.  My sister called me twice to thank me for the gloves and tell me how much she likes them.  I really like the gloves myself, so my much so I knitted a pair of black one just for me.  I was able to get these ones done in a little under 7 hours.

Click Here for the pattern I used.  For the pair I made I revers the thumb gusset directions on the one for my left hand so the seam is always in the middle.  Wish I had thought of that when making my sister her gloves.  I also turned them inside out when sewing the seam to give it a better looking line.

This was a really fun project to do and I look forward to make more of these.  In fact let's have a little give-away contest.  In the comment section tell me what color you would want to see these gloves in.  I'll randomly pick a winner and knit the person a pair in the color they picked.  You have till April 15th to enter.  I'll try to get the winner their prize before that fall, but be warn I get distracted easily and it might take me a while to get them to you.

Till next time, get the hell out of my kitchen, I have kitting to do.

3/19/13 – I'm Back

Wow, it has been a long time since I have blogged.  I apologize that I has taken me so long to get back to this.  I have had just about a rough of a 9 months as someone can have without dealing with a death.  I normally try not to get too personal here on the blog.  My aim is to keep the focus getting "excited and creating things" as Wil Wheaton would say.  But I do want to share with you a little bit of what has been going on and more importantly how I'm dealing with things.  I hope that some of the advice and strategies that I have been using can help you deal with whatever is going on in your life.  I have always said that due to our limited prospective as human that in a very real way the worse problem in the world is whatever the worst problem you are personally dealing with.

But don't worry, this post will not be all doom and gloom.  I have recovered enough to start knitting again and I have actually finished some things.  I have a scarf I dreamt up that I made for my mom as birthday gift.  In a little bit I show you some pictures and teach you how I made it.  It's super easy.

So a little background on what has been going on.  First off late last spring early last summer my Dad was diagnosed with Lymphoma.  Luckily they don't live to far from Philadelphia, so he was able to go to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for treatment and see some of the leading authorities of Lymphoma.  He had a number of Chemo treatment and it was very stressful on the whole family.  It was a terrifying process with diagnosis and treatment, but the more we learned the easier it was to handle.  Not knowing what is going on is the hardest part of anything like this.  With a few bumps (and Hospital stays) along the way the Chemo went well.  After that he did a month's worth of Radiation treatments to get any stray Cancer cell.  This also went well and in fact just finished up a few weeks back.  The only bump in the road from that was the day after he finished he came down with pneumonia, spending almost a week in the hospital.  The good news is that he out of the hospital and doing well.  Now we just have to wait and see how successful the treatment where.  With the type of Lymphoma he had we should know in about six months if it worked or not, and the way you know is if it comes back.

In a way this makes the next six months the hardest part.  Once we found out what we're dealing with and my Dad got into treatment, we were being proactive.  But now we just have to wait and hope.  It's the helplessness that really eats at you.  That and the knowledge if it does come back, the success rate of the treatment options go way down.

The next float in our parade of challenges came in august   I was in a car accident.  I talk about this a bit before so I won't go into too many details as to what happened.  Basically a drunk driver rear-ended me half a dozen times, causing injuries to my shoulders and the spine in my neck.  I Have going from being in excruciating pain and barley able to do anything, to just a fair amount of pain and able to do most normal things around the house.  However even sitting a typing from more than an hour is still difficult.  I'm on my second round of Physical Therapy, but I'm hoping to be back to normal in a month or two.

This brings us to the day of hurricane Sandy.  I don't know if you have ever tried to make an appointment with a Gastroentonlogus, which I know is misspelled, but MS Word doesn't know what I mean to write and at this point I'm tired of fighting it.  Anyway, if you have been to one you will know that it takes forever to schedule appointment with this particular type of specialist.  I had been having some pain and nausea after eating and the doctor wanted to an endoscopy.  It just so happened that was scheduled for the same day the hurricane hit.  Luckily the hurricane did hit us in the Philly region till around 1 or 2 in the afternoon and my test was set for 10am.  They were able to do the test and get me home by 12:30.  Unfortunately they found that I have evidence of gastritis and a bleeding ulcer.  Now I have to take a pill an hour before I eat, which is a big pain in the ass.

One more minor issue, I have been having issue with knee pain when I go up and down stairs.  Told my new doctor (my old one quit about 3 months ago, and no it wasn't because of me) and she ordered some X-rays.  The X-rays showed that I have some slight joint narrowing.  The fix for which is more Physical Therapy, after which I believe I will have put in just about enough time to get a degree in Physical Therapy.

Beside those all those things the last nine months has seen the following financial challenges:
  •  Christmas, two family member birthdays being in December and my anniversary being Jan 2nd.
  •  Increasing oil prices
  •  Over $500 in repairs bill for my heating system which is oil base and also provides me with hot water
  •   Increases in the cost of my medical insurance and co-pays
  •  Multiple car repairs, including one caused by Car Sense putting in a new thermostat backwards (luckily I found a great new mechanic and never need to use Car Sense for repairs again)
Finally to top it all of my relationship with Laura end three weeks ago.  I'm not going to go into all of the how's and why's.  It is no else is business and really unimportant to the purpose of this story.  I will say Laura is an amazing person and a fantastic artist, if you have never seen her art, click on her name and it will take you to her website.  Anyway back to me, the dissolution of the relationship was very upsetting and was the finally straw.  I need to do something.  So I talked to people, I called a ton of friends and let them hear my sob stories and that helped to various degrees, but I did get some very good advice.  My friend Becky, who is one of the smartest and kindest people I know, told me to make sure that every day I looked for something good that happened that day.  To actively seek out the good thing, even if it something as small as traffic to work wasn't as bad as the day before.  I know that sounds silly but it really did help.  The good thing for today was that I got a bunch of writing done at lunch and after work.

The other thing that I have done is to make exercise a top priority.  I have committed to getting at least 30min of cardiovascular exercise every weekday.  I have placed this commitment before everything else, if I late to work because of it so be it.  And IT has helped a great deal.  Back in collage I had psychology professor who was also a practicing psychiatrist.  She told us that in all here years of treating patients the single most effective antidepressant she had ever seen was regular cardiovascular exercise.  It was the first this she proscribed any patients with depression.  Even if it doesn't help the depression, the patient was getting healthier, so it's a win/win.

Another thing I have done is applying for a loan to get a new heat system that uses natural.  The reason I say that is there are a number of government programs that one can use to help one's self.  This one is run by the state.  I was turned down the first time I applied.  I didn't just that no for an answer and found out why I was turned down.  I then took steps to fix the issue that caused me to be turned down and reapplied.  It looks like this time will be a win and I hopefully will have a new system in place by the end of the month.

Being creative has also help a great deal.  I have done a fair amount of knitting which has the benefit for being both creative and relaxing.  The things I'm making for the most part are for me, which is a nice and need change.  I'll be posting the things I make here, just don't expect them too soon, I'm still learning.  I also have been writing a fair amount.  I hope to have some of it finish and published soon.  Being creative has always been a good outlet for me and when I'm not making something I just feel off.

Finally, writing this all out has helps some.  It's nice to just enumerate everything that is going on, put it down in words and say I'm having a tough time of things.  It helps me not feel so guilty about feeling depressed.  I do in fact have things that are depressing going on.  I felt bad about feeling bad and it became the snaking eating its own tail.  Posting this hopeful will help me break the particular cycle.

All that being said, I still have a long way to go.  I spend more time than not being depressed.  My life has moved in a new and completely unpredictable direction, a direction that has yet to even fully taken shape.  That fact of the matter is that I need to talk to someone professional about everything.  I just need to find out how to afford it.

Now if your still reading or if you skipped down to the picture (and who can blame you) on to the fun part.  Here you can see the scarf I made my mom for her birthday.  It mainly garter stitch with a bit of flourish at the ends.  She has a brown jacket so the terracotta yarn will match it well.  Here are the steps to make one:

  1. Cast on 32 stitches
  2. Work in garter stitch for 2 inches
  3. Start Ribbing with Knit 1 then Purl 2. Knit 2, to the last stitch which to you knit.  Then reverse that and start with a purl.  Repeat this for about an inch.
  4. Work in garter stitch till you have it about three inches form where you wanted it
  5. Repeat step 3
  6. Work in garter stitch for 2 inches
  7.  Bind off

And there you have it.  I know that my directions are not in the normal terminology of patterns you can find in book, but I'm still new at knitting.

I have also knitted something for my sister for her birthday, but she hasn't gotten it yet.  I'll post it when I know she has received it.

OK, enough belly aching.  Now that I'm single I will need to find someone to cook for because even with all the biking at the gym, I'll get nice and fat if I eat all the stuff I plan to cook.  So if you know me in real life, come on over and I'll try out a new recipe on you.

Till next time, get the hell out of my kitchen.

Oh and one more piece of advice from RuPaul "if you can't love yourself, how the hell you going to love anyone else"

Silence from a Crash

For once I have a good reason for having not updating the blog.  Due to the legal ramification still being sorted out, I may leave certain things out of this story until the situation comes to a close.

The other day I was on my way home from a doctor’s appointment and I stop at a stop sign, like you do.  Then out of nowhere, CRASH, I’m in the intersection.  Great someone hit me I think, then Crash, Crash, I’m thought the intersection, he’s hit me again and again.  I was rear ended at least 4 but less than 12 time, I wasn’t really counting.

He hits me again as I’m pulling off to the side of the road.  I get out of the car, witnesses start coming over to see if I’m OK.  Someone calls the cops.  I talk with the witness, telling her I don’t understand what just happened.  She says, I saw the whole thing, he just kept hitting you.

Finally the driver of the other vehicle gets out of his van.  He says he’s sorry.  I tell him I’m sorry he hit me too, but the cops are on the way to sort this all out.  He points to the wheel and says no good.  It’s clear he doesn’t speak much English.  He gets back into the van and starts backing up.  I hit the hook of the van, and shout where are you going, then I run around the back of van to take a shot of his license plate, because while I may be foolish, I’m no fool.  He stops and gets out, repeats that he sorry and points at the wheel once more, “no good” he says.

The cops arrive in force; apparently my hitting the hood and yelling made the person who called the cops say that there was an altercation after the crash.  I assure the cops that he only hit me with his van, several times. The lead officer takes my statement, the witness’s, then to the driver of the van’s.  At this point he asks the other driver if he had been drinking.  The man holds up his thumb and forefinger and says; “little bit” A quick breathalyzer later, he’s in hand cuffs.  And I’m standing there the adrenaline subsiding and my hand being to shake a bit.

The officer I had been speaking with comes over with a bit of paper work for me.  It has all the contact info for everyone.  He tells me three interesting facts:

1.     The Driver is drunk, which explains a bit of why he had trouble getting out of the car and didn’t seem to really understand what was going on
2.     The Driver has no driver license, which along with being drunk goes a ways to explaining why he hit me so many times
3.     The driver is an Illegal Alien, which explains the whole no driver’s license thing and the no insurance thing

At this point, with the adrenaline no longer pumping though my veins and all of the shock of what has happened finally sinking in, combined with everything else going on in my life, I just lose it.  I’m sobbing uncontrollably.  The cop has me sit down on the curb, tells me to take as long as I need, “we don’t need you getting in another accident.”

Eventually I calm down enough to drive home.  The drive, at about 10mph takes me 2mins at most.  If only my doctor had been a little less efficient, if only their printer took a little longer, if only I had stop to check my voice mail in the parking lot instead of deciding to wait till I got home.  All of this could be avoided.  I keep thinking that, but then I think about how nice of a day it was.  It was the first that that was not really hot in a while.  There were a lot of people out that day.  If this jerk didn’t hit me, who would he have hit.  He was drunk enough to not notice a stopped car, he certainly would not have noticed a person crossing the street.  He could have killed someone.  He also could have hit another car that was coming thought the intersection, someone with kids in the car.  The more I think about that the more I realize that this was far from the worse outcome.

As for me now, I’m pretty banged up and it is making life a little more difficult.  I start physical therapy tonight and I hope that with some hard work I should be back to normal.  Until that I’m a little limited in the things I can make and put up here.  I have some back logged stuff I working on and I’ll try to post those and some other projects I’m thinking about starting once I’m back to normal on a weekly basis.

Till next week, get the hell into my kitchen, ‘cause I need someone to cook for me.

P.S.  Please, Please, Please Don’t Drink and Drive, if you have had something to drink, call cab, call a friend, hell call me.  But don’t get behind the wheel.  Think about every bad decision you thought was good one while you were drunk or even tipsy, now can you really be trusted to make the call if you are alright to drive.
